The
following images are a result of a few day's r&r in Berlin, Germany.
Having never been I wanted to see as much as possible, and document
it with images. However, taking the pro-kit on a short break is a bit
like a busman's holiday and I wanted to do something different, something
that was the antithesis of digital.
I decided to document my travels on film (shock horror) and even worse,
on a Lomo
LCA! For those of you unfamiliar with this camera it is a small
35mm Russian built piece of kit of variable quality (shot to shot). It
has a clunky action, minimal control over focussing and no control whatsoever
over aperture or shutter speed. The lens is a fixed focal length
32mm f2.8 Minitar and is sharp in the centre but a bit dodgy at the
edges (it vignettes badly in certain light). But you can put it in your
pocket and forget its there and that's what I like about it. My
copy was courtesy of my partner Sarah, who bought it and never used
it.
Looking at the results I'd say she got a good copy and I've deliberately
vignetted some of the shots for effect - the camera shot quite cleanly
about 50% of the time. After roll four it produced a screw from
somewhere inside and the wind-on got very clunky indeed. Because
of the images and colours it produces the Lomo has quite a cult following
- see www.lomography.com
for details.
Berlin
is a wonderful city, mixing modern cutting edge design with ancient
classical structures and its still 'under-construction'. It has
its very own prescence moulded from years of change, both good and bad.
The following images are my take on the city during a very short
stay and I barely began to scratch the surface.
