new to commissioning?

If this is the first time you've commissioned a professional photographer you may find this site of interest. It outlines how professional photographers work and structure their fees:

help us to help you

There are four stages to delivering the images you need for your project. A close working relationship between photographer and client at each stage is key to achieving great results:

the brief

The brief you send us should be as detailed as possible. It should include (if known) the estimated number of images required for the project and details about where those images will be used (i.e. books, magazines, paid advertsing, self-produced leaflets/brochures, web etc.). This will allow us to give you the best estimate we can. We will call you if there's anything in the brief we need to clarify.

We will deliver an estimate of costs to complete the project along with our terms & conditions

Once we receive your approval we will issue you a confirmation of booking form. We will not accept any other work from other clients for those times and dates.

the shoot

During the shoot we will work to your brief, so its important that you tell us as much as possible beforehand about the type and range of images you need.

post-shoot, the selection process

As soon as possible after the shoot - usually the same or next day - the image captures are edited down to provide you with a set of images to select your finals from. Your proofs are uploaded to our web-server and the web address (URL) is e-mailed to you. Your e-proofs stay on the server for 14 days (longer by agreement) to give you time to choose. E-proofs are lo-res batch converted jpeg files for position/selection only and should not be considered as representing final master-file quality!

Many clients and designers download and use the large web previews as 'position files' (FPOs) to see what their project will look like before they order the hi-res master files. For this purpose the e-proof large previews are watermarked "for selection/position only".

mastering the selected images

Once you have selected the images you require from the e-proofs selection we will create the hi-res master image files. These are all given individual attention**
and are cropped, colour-balanced, blended, and retouched by hand. They are finished to a standard suitable for 4-colour offset reproduction or web use.

Like a good quality 'hand-made print'
in film days, a master digital file needs time to prepare. Therefore, please do not leave your selections until the last minute in your project, as we cannot guarantee we can meet very short deadlines.

** Unlike some, we do not shoot then leave you with a CD of hundreds of uncorrected images that have had little or no user input in their creation (anyone can push an "auto" button in Photoshop to spit out automated JPEGs) Instead, you select the images you want and we master and retouch them to suit the style of the project - adjusting exposure, tonality and colour palette. Images are then retouched by hand to produce the master files. Taking the image really is only half the story......

delivery

Delivery of master TIFF and/or JPEG files (made from the master TIFFs) are normally made on CD or DVD. We can also FTP or e-mail files to meet urgent deadlines. Master image files are delivered in the industry standard Adobe RGB 1998 colourspace.
